A NSW coroner has recommended fundamental changes to the way the Immigration Department monitors the mental health of detainees after finding systemic failures in the care of three men who committed suicide in three months at the Villawood detention centre.

From 1 January 2012, more than 3,500 Australians living with severe and persistent mental illness will receive day-to-day support. An extra $19.3 million will be provided to community organisations to deliver the Support for Day to Day Living in the Community (D2DL) program. Read the media release.
