Reach Out Pro

Jonathan Nicholas, CEO of Inspire Foundation, says:

“Our research shows that up to 20% of users of ReachOut.com are health care professionals using ReachOut.com to support a young person in their care. Reach Out Pro was developed to better support these professionals. It is based on research that shows many health care professionals are hesitant about using technology as part of the care of young people and may not be aware on how it can enhance care. Through Pro, mental health professionals are able to reach out to young people, step into their world and use technology to help young people overcome their difficulties.”

 Reach Out Pro

Reach Out Pro is a web-based service that supports health care professionals to use new technologies in their work with young people. The Reach Out Pro website provides information about what young people are doing online and the significance of technology in their lives. Reach Out Pro also provides practical ideas about how to integrate technology into their practice to better meet the needs of young people and ultimately improve mental health and suicide prevention outcomes.

The project is closely linked to ReachOut.com to help provide young people with access to an online community as welll as providing trusted information and advice targeted specifically towards people between ages 14 and 25. This project is managed by Inspire Foundation.

Aims

  • To teach health care professionals about new technologies and what they mean to young people.
  • To provide answers to questions such as “what is social networking?” and “why is it so important for healthcare professionals to know about it?”
  • To allow quick access to resources and information for young people in treatment.
  • To provide easy instructions based on clinician experience on how to incorporate technology into the health care provider's (HCP’s) practice.
  • To offer advice on how HCPs can make clinical practice more efficient using technology.

  • Providing onsite training to health care professionals in using technologies in their practice with young people.
  • Forming alliances and working relationships with key partners to ensure we are providing a reliable and evidence-based service.

Evaluation

An external evaluation of the Reach Out Pro project is currently being undertaken by the Brain and Mind Research Institute, University of Sydney. Findings from this evaluation will be available in December 2009.

Lessons learned

  • Through ongoing research and evaluation of the Reach Out Pro website, key findings have determined the direction of the project.
  • There is a significant challenge in promoting the integration of technologies into everyday practice by HCPs, where the evidence is still emerging.

Project partners
