Active Response Bereavement Outreach (ARBOR) Project

Description
Short to medium term bereavement counselling for those bereaved by suicide. ARBOR is complemented by its Volunteer Peer Supporters - volunteers who have been bereaved by suicide and volunteer their time to accompany Counsellors to walk alongside the newly bereaved. ARBOR is proud to offer training packages to professionals such as suicide bereavement and awareness training and Grieving Aboriginal Way training. ARBOR is also able to offer emergency debriefing, support for workplace, education and training settings, telephone counselling (by appointment) and support groups. ARBOR has MOUs with organisations and services such as the Coronial Counselling Service, Samaritans WA and City of Armadale to enhance support for those in need of a bereavement service.

- To develop a culturally appropriate suicide prevention program for Indigenous people in the Fitzroy Valley
- Undertake cultural activities and trips that build strong relationships, self identity and confidence in young people;
- Utilise cultural frameworks and trips to promote suicide prevention activities including community awareness and education;
- Build stronger relationships and support mechanisms within family groups for individuals at risk of suicide and self harm;
- Foster networks and working relationships with community groups, service providers and government agencies with a focus on mental health and alcohol and drug issues; and
- Undertake a positive town-based activity that relates to young people’s interests, promoting strong positive messages and role models in a safe, healthy space.
