Description

The Expanded Horizons Program (EHP) is a program funded by the Department of Health and Ageing as part of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy to support sexually, sex and gender diverse youth as well as young people from Refugee or Culturally & Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds on the Gold Coast. The program also supports whole of community suicide prevention initiatives.

Living Beyond Suicide

Description

A free program providing practical and sensitive  support to families and individuals bereaved though suicide. Staff and specially trained volunteers can offer home visits and telephone support. The service is available from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week. Anyone in the community can contact Living Beyond Suicide directly to access support.

Living Beyond Suicide hosts the annual walk of remembrance “Walk Through the Darkness” in November. The program also offers community education.

Description

This project has a particular focus on preventing suicides within the mental health sector. There is an emphasis on giving mental health workers the tools and support that they need to prevent suicidal crisis from occurring. There is also a focus on preventing further suicides by supporting the friends and family of with mental illness who are bereaved by suicide. By providing workers with tools necessary to have a holistic response to suicide we aim to prevent suicides in a population of people at particularly high risk of suicide – those with persistent mental illness.

The Wesley LifeForce Suicide Prevention Project

Description
The aim of the Wesley LifeForce Suicide Prevention Project is to  build community capacity to engage in suicide prevention activity, improve access to appropriate services and to support those at risk of suicide and bereaved by suicide. This is achieved through the establishment and support of suicide prevention community networks throughout Australia, and the development and maintenance of training programs, workshops and other events targeting suicide awareness and prevention. Training is provided for the general community, general practitioners and their staff, relationship counsellors and aged care nurses and workers. Suicide prevention training for members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is being launched in August 2015.

Mindframe National Media Initiative

The Mindframe National Media Initiative provides access to up-to-date, evidence-based information to support the reporting, portrayal and communication about suicide and mental illness in the Australian mass media. The initiative involves building a collaborative relationship with the media and other sectors that influence the media, such as key sources for news stories. 

Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health under the National Suicide Prevention Program, the Mindframe National Media Initiative is managed by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health. Program activities include national leadership, resource development and national dissemination, and ongoing contribution to the evidence base in this area.

Description

Established in March 2011, in response to the research that identifies that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex people have significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety and have an increased risk of suicide, MindOUT! began by undertaking a series of surveys of LGBTI people, LGBTI organisations and mainstream organisations about LGBTI related mental health and suicide prevention issues.

MindOUT! has the goals of:

  • Working with mainstream mental health and suicide prevention organisations to assist them to be more responsive to the needs of LGBTI people and communities.
  • Assisting LGBTI organisations to be more responsive to suicide prevention and mental health issues for LGBTI persons and communities.
  • Supporting LGBTI people and communities to better identify and respond to their mental health needs.
