1.  What is the Living is For Everyone Framework?

The Living is For Everyone (LIFE) Framework is the latest in a series of national suicide prevention initiatives. The framework is a national resource for action based on the best available evidence to guide activities aimed at reducing the rate at which people take their own lives.

 
2.  What is the National Suicide Prevention Strategy?

The National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS) commenced in 1999 and builds on the former National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy (NYSPS). The Australian Government provides funding for the development of national and community based models of suicide prevention.

 
3.  Why is the LIFE Framework important?

The LIFE Framework is used to improve understanding of suicide and emphasise the role people can play in reducing suicide. It also provides appropriate ways to respond to people considering taking their own lives, or those who have been affected by suicide.

 
4.  What are the aims of the LIFE Framework?

The LIFE Framework aims to:

  • reduce the incidence of suicide and suicidal behaviour
  • promote suicide prevention activities across the Australian population and at-risk groups
  • build strength and resilience across the community
  • improve early identification and intervention
  • promote research about suicide
  • develop and enhance existing services and programs with governments, business, non-government and community organisations.


5.  Who produces the LIFE Framework?

The Australian Government commissioned the redeveloped LIFE Framework as part of a National Action Plan on Mental Health Issues. The documents were prepared by the Department of Health and Ageing following extensive consultation, which included a number of external committees, academics, diversity research groups, mental health providers and consumers.

 
6.  Who is the LIFE Framework for?

The LIFE Framework and resources are designed for people across the Australian community who are involved in suicide and self-harm prevention activities. These include:

  • academics
  • researchers
  • policy makers
  • community and health services professionals 
  • service providers
  • community organisations.
